Today I feel like the universe is talking to me and saying, “All things are connected.” Brett and I were having coffee this morning, and we saw the trailer for the Steven Spielberg remake of “West Side Story”. This is such a touchstone musical for me and got me through some of the most important events of my life. It all started with the original movie, and the one song “Somewhere” stood out. I (like most every other gay kid) loved that song, and it spoke to me in an unexpected way. During the AIDS crisis I attended so many memorial services, and many included this song as a central theme. It always added a beautiful heaviness to the funeral reminding us that the future could be brighter than the sorrow of today. Move forward a few more years, and we came to mine and Brett’s wedding. I wanted to begin our ceremony with a song that could bridge our community’s past before moving to a song of hope for our future, and this is the song I choose for that threshold. It is a beautiful piece that reminds us we sometimes live outside of the time we are born in, ahead of everything except for hope. To quote the song, “Someday, somewhere We’ll find a new way of living… There’s a place for us Somewhere a place for us.”
A Time to Reflect

Crazy how seeing something like that can take you back to another important time and, you remember it all like it was yesterday.
Very well said, describing how music plays an important place through out our lives. When I hear a special song I get a visual of what was happening for me in the past. I often go to when my father was playing his guitar and I was singing along in a different room. He is gone now but the memories and songs continues.
