The Prairie has a Rainbow
My Story, my Life
Book Description
Ordering Information
This is the story of my life. I am a member of the Ingalls family that was the subject of the Little House on the Prairie books and TV series, so it made sense that my story of a average American gay man be told.
It covers my childhood in the mid 1900’s as a gay child believing I was the only person in the world like me. At 19 years old I found the community I belonged to, and began my career as a professional dancer while discovering this new world.
I share my pre AIDS life, the three boyfriends I had (including two of them testing positive during our relationship). I dedicate a chapter to my dear friend David who lost his battle with AIDS and the impact to me and our circle of friends. He was just one of over one hundred thousand community members to leave this world due to this horrible disease.
A chapter dedicated to competing at the 1998 Gay Games celebrating the journey and experience of this amazing organization. Lastly, the friendships that changed my life and confirmed the idea that friends become the family we choose. They saved me many times and provided the threshold changes in my life that took it in a direction I could not have anticipated.

Comments I have received
“This is a true story about someone’s life many of us don’t experience, and perhaps haven’t thought too much about. It was so good. I read it in a day. I ugly cried through some of the stories of lives lost to HIV. By the end, one of my greatest takeaways was the power of life friends that have the ability to support you through anything. I highly recommend this book.”
“Another great book by R. Lee Ingalls, a must read if you want to follow the real Ingalls family.”

Being part of this family and gay puts me in a unique position, one that demonstrates we are everywhere including one of the most iconic families in our nation’s history. My goal with this book is not only
to tell my story but to share the experience of gay men of my generation from an average American point of view. Laura Ingalls Wilder created an image and brand with her works and I am not trying to change that image or brand but to freshen it and bring it into this millennium. Laura’s works are known for the values that are foundations in her books, integrity, honesty and when given the opportunity to do the right thing, that is what you do. My first book
and now my second book should continue to support those values as well.
