On writing my first book called INGALLS ON THE PRARIE. When I decided to move forward with writing my book the plan was to write the story of my life. As I began to write the book, I felt I needed to explain the connection between Laura Ingalls Wilder and me, and then talk about my ancestry. I quickly realized I did not know much about my Great Grandfather Samuel other than he was a farmer. I knew a few things about my Grandparents, but I was saddened by the fact that I didn’t ask them more about their life as a child and young adult. I was only able to write a few things about them. When I got to my parents, I knew I had more detail about their lives as children, and the early years of their marriage. My Mother is still with us so I could discuss the details with her, and she could guide me where needed. I decided to change directions and write about my parents’ early years first. After getting some of the initial thoughts in my head, it occurred to me I should ask my Mother if she wanted her story told or not. She was a little apprehensive at first, but once she read the first couple of chapters she was more comfortable with it, and so I set about writing my first book. It is one thing to think about writing a book, and something all together different to actually write it. My hopes are that my book(s) will travel through time and become increasingly more important. I hope I am following in Laura’s footsteps, and telling the tales of a normal family in our nation’s history.
